Closely spaced maple slats provide strong support for your mattress and are kept in place with notched ledger strips. In addition the slats in king size beds have a center support beam with a 5th leg in the middle of the bed.
Beds intended for a boxspring and mattress have strong angle iron brackets, instead of slats, set flush with the bottom of the bed rails. King size beds also have a cross slat and 5th leg in the middle of the bed to support the double box springs.
